Leeds Kirkgate Market became the largest indoor market in Europe when it opened in 1857. But its not just the size that sets it apart as truly unique shopping experience. It was designed by the celebrated architect Joseph Paxton who was responsible for the iconic Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, London. Along with Brown's Sweets, Leeds market is also home to the original Marks & Spencers. Michael Marks set up the Penny Bazaar, with the slogan “Don’t ask the price, it’s a penny” Later he joined Tom Spencer and created Marks & Spencers, and the rest is history.
In 2013 £12 million was invested in the future of Leeds Market and renovation work began. These included recovering the roof of the 1976 and 1981 buildings, allowing for the creation of a cutting edge events space with communal seating where shoppers can sit and enjoy street food and live music. Revamping older units and building new units for more great stalls and variety. A shop and drop initiative that allows customers to buy fresh produce and store them in custom built cold store rooms and collect before 5:30pm.
There has never been a better time to visit Leeds Kirkgate Market and of course Brown's Sweets, pick up a bargain and be part of its rich history.
